Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions and answers.

PLEASE REVIEW THE AIR SHOW SECURITY PAGE FOR OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Q: Where is the 2010 Westfield International Air Show and Open House taking place?

A: The event will take place at Barnes Municipal Airport, in Westfield, Massachusetts. Please see the Directions page for directions on how to get here.

Additional information on Barnes ANG Base: Barnes ANG Base is home of the 131st Fighter Squadron and 104th Fighter Wing, currently assigned the F-15 Eagle aircraft. Barnes ANG Base and Otis ANG Base represent the Air National Guard Wings of the Massachusetts National Guard, headquartered in Milford, Massachusetts. The aerodrome, with its two active runways and supporting taxiways, is shared with Barnes Municipal Airport.

Q: What is the cost of admission?

A: There is no cost for general admission. Box Seating, located adjacent to show center, may be available, prices vary due to limited seating. There will be a $10 donation requested for parking. The donation offsets the cost of leasing the land for parking as well as supports many local charities.

Q: Can I purchase VIP seats?

A: This year the VIP seats will be offered at the Runway Resturant at the Barnes Municipal Airport.  Visit www.therunwayatbarnes.com for details (click on the "EVENTS" Tab).

Q: Will there be a shuttle from the parking areas?

A: There will be a shuttle from airport parking areas only. You'll be able to watch the show as you ride in comfort...this year Peter Pan buses will be used to shuttle spectators.  Some parking lots will have the famous Peter Pan Double-Deckers as shuttles.  (Don't forget to bring a back-pack for the Pack-A-Bus promotion sponsored by Peter Pan Bus Company.)

Q: Can I park an RV in the parking areas?

A: There will be some spots available for RV's. There will be a $15 donation for parking and RV's can stay overnight. However, the gate to the base will be secured in the evening.

Q: Can I leave and re-enter the Air Show?

A: Yes. Since there is no fee for admission and no coolers or large bags allowed on base, you are encouraged to keep these items in your vehicle.

Q: Are coolers permitted?

A: No. Please review all the important entry restrictions on the Security page.

Q: Are cameras and video recorders allowed?

A: Yes, cameras and video recorders are permitted along with small camera bags.

Q: Can I bring a lawn chair or blanket?

A: Absolutely. Guests are invited and encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit. However, tents and awnings of any kind are NOT permitted.

Q: Can I bring an umbrella?

A: Yes. Handheld umbrellas are permitted. Large beach umbrellas or umbrellas placed in the ground are NOT permitted, nor are any other tent or awning structures.

Q: Do you have any bleacher seating?

A: No.

Q: Can you give me a schedule of acts?

A: We have a list of acts (please see the Acts page) but not a schedule of acts since specific schedules are finalized much closer to the event, depending on various conditions.  Expect all acts to fly each day, with the first act flying at 9 a.m.  We anticipate continual flying performances all day, with no breaks in entertainment.  In total we have more than 30 acts performing and 60 static aircraft scheduled to arrive.

Q: What is a static display?

A: A static display is an aircraft that is on display inside the spectator area. It is not an aircraft that is flying but is available for photos, viewing and to meet the aircrew. This is a wonderful opportunity to get up close to the aircraft you have only viewed in photos or from a distance. All static aircraft are on the Acts Page with an (*).

Q: Is there shade?

A: The Air Show is held under the open sky. Patrons are encouraged to plan accordingly with umbrellas, sunglasses, lotion and hats. Shade can be found under the wings of static display aircraft but there is no "shaded area" per se.

Q: Are pets allowed?

A: Pets are not allowed onto Barnes Air National Guard Base, except for service animals (seeing eye dogs, etc.)

Q: Will the show be televised?

A: No.

Q: How do I get a media pass for the show?

A: Request, in writing, for a media pass. The request should include a photo copy of your press credentials and the date(s) you will be attending. Send requests to the ANG Public Affairs office at:

104FW/PA
Barnes Air National Guard Base
175 Falcon Drive
Westfield, MA 01085-1482

Q: What happens if it rains?

A: The show will go on, rain or shine.

Q: Can I fly in to Barnes Municipal Airport?

A: Yes, but the airfield will close to non-airshow aviation from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sat and Sun, so you would need to land by 7:30 a.m. and would not be allowed to leave until 5:30 p.m. or later. General aviation aircraft parking will be coordinated by our FBOs (AirFlyte or Five Star) near the base of the control tower. As always, check NOTAMS regularly. AirFlyte at (413) 568-4686 and 5 Star Aviation at (413) 562-4999 are the two FBOs at BAF.

Q: Where can I stay overnight, and what other activities are there in the Westfield area?

A: There are several hotels in the area, visit our sponsor page, http://www.westfieldonweekends.org/ or  http://www.valleyvisitor.com/ for some ideas on local places to stay and things to do.

Q: Can I bring food?

A:  There are many food vendors at the show. Picnic style food is permissible on the base/airport but coolers are not permitted. See the cooler FAQ for more information.

Q: Can I bring a frozen drink on base?

A: Yes, you may bring in non-alcoholic beverages in plastic containers that have been frozen.

Q: Why can't I bring ice onto the base?

A: Loose ice is prohibited because it is difficult to search. Ice packs ARE permitted.

Q: What defines a cooler?

A: A "cooler" is anything that was designed to insulate. Often the contents are fine as long as they are NOT in a cooler.

Q: What does the parking donation go to?

A:  There is a $10 donation per car requested.  The donation proceeds go back to the community through donations and grants;  many community and military organizations benefit from this donation.  A few examples are the Boys and Girls Club, Kamp for Kids, the Carson Center, the USO, Westfield Youth Athletics, the Military Family Readiness Group, the Westfield High School music program, etc.
